A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD from Poole is to receive an award from national children’s charity, Little Troopers, after becoming a young carer for her mum during lockdown.

Isobel Keating has been awarded ‘Little Trooper of the Month’ for helping her RAF veteran mum, Clare, who has a degenerative eye condition which limits her vision.

Because of lockdown, Clare was unable to receive the support she usually has at home, so Isobel stepped up to help her mum with tasks she struggles to do unaided, including helping to look after her four-year-old brother, Samuel.

Isobel’s mum, Clare said: “Isobel has been absolutely amazing throughout lockdown.

“She has such a selfless, positive can-do attitude and she is always looking for ways to help other people. She has taken on tasks with a maturity beyond her years and does everything with a smile.

“I couldn’t have managed without her during lockdown and we are delighted that her efforts have been recognised by Little Troopers.”

During all of this Isobel has been keeping up with her school work, enjoying her PE lessons with Joe Wicks and even using her outdoor exercise time to pick-up litter in the neighbourhood and help her mummy to look after an elderly neighbour as well.

Isobel’s dad is also in the RAF and has been working away from home in the week as a key worker at RAF Odiham in Hampshire.

Little Troopers supports children who have parents serving in the British Armed Forces, by offering resources to help support military children during challenging times such as when they are separated from their serving parents and during house moves.

Louise Fetigan, founder of Little Troopers, added: “Isobel has shown so much kindness, strength and resilience during lockdown while her Dad has been working away from home.

“We were really moved to read about how she has been helping her mum and her neighbours even though she is only seven! She is very deserving of our Little Trooper of the Month Award.”

Isobel will receive a Little Troopers medal, certificate and special prize as part of her award.
