A FOOD store selling ambient products near or passed their best before dates has moved into a larger, street-facing store in West Moors.

Payless, run by Nick Sellar and Jack Browne, was set up in 2016 and initially operated from an industrial unit in Three Legged Cross.

But now they have upgraded to a new store in Station Road, West Moors.

Owner Nick Sellar said: “We started in 2016, I had just finished university and me and Jack had always wanted to start a business together.

“We noticed there is a lot of these discount food and drink shops in the north of the UK.

“We thought we would bring it to the south.

“We stock products approaching their best before dates, it is all packaged goods.

“It is a win, win situation, we save people money through buying these products and we save these products from going to waste.

“It has gone from strength to strength. It has been really popular and active on social media.”

Nick and Jack post regular videos on Payless’ Facebook page, showing what new stock they have in and how much customers can buy the products for.

The new store, Nick said, means more people will see the shop in the street rather than just hearing about it through social media.

He continued: “We were searching for a better location.

“It was a tenant’s market because not many businesses seem to be starting or moving.

“We liked the location, we know the parking situation is fine and it is still reasonably local to our Three Legged Cross customers.

“The shop front is quite prominent and it is a busy road.”

Payless sources its products through residual stock specialists, which Nick said is key to be able to offer the best value.

Speaking about the business during the coronavirus pandemic, Nick said it had been really positive.

He said: “Because we are a food and drink store, we were able to remain open.

“It has been really good for us, we have never been so busy.”

The current government guidelines, Payless are only allowing five people in the store at one time, all of whom must be wearing a facemask.
