Coastguards were called to Portland after reports of a possibly drunk man struggling to swim.
The National Maritime Operations Centre called Portland Bill and Wyke coastguard rescue teams on Wednesday, to help Weymouth and Portland Police at Hamm Beach.
A man, who was believed to be drunk, was struggling to swim out from the beach to a waiting pleasure craft.
When the coastguard teams arrived, the man had reached the craft and was making his way back to Portland Marina.
Police and coastguard met them there, were they spoke with marina staff, conducted a welfare check and offered some safety advice.
