A MAJOR police investigation has been launched in Bournemouth town centre after a series of linked crimes in the early hours of this morning.

A man was attacked with a bike seat and a pole, a police officer was spat at and raiders smashed their way into designer clothing store Richmond Classics at 1.30am today.

Police were called to reports that the window of the clothing store in Westover Road had been smashed and that an altercation was taking place in the area.

Officers attended the shop and a man was located inside. A 35-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and is assisting officers with their enquiries.

Officers at the scene also saw a man being chased by another man holding a bike seat and pole in the direction of St Peter’s Road and an altercation occurred. A 35-year-old Bournemouth man was arrested on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

He spat at an officer en route to custody and was further arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker. He is assisting detectives with enquiries.

A man aged in his 40s was then found in Old Christchurch Road with injuries to his hands and arms and a small puncture wound to his back, reportedly sustained during the initial altercation that took place in Westover Road. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Following further enquiries, another 35-year-old Bournemouth man was arrested on suspicion of burglary in connection with the break-in at Richmond Classics. He is also assisting officers with their enquiries.

An investigation into these incidents is ongoing and a cordon was in place in Westover Road and Gervis Place throughout the morning.
