THE crew of P&O cruise ship Aurora alerted coastguards after spotting red flares along the shore line in the early hours of the morning.
Rescue teams from Southbourne and Poole were called out at 1.30am on Sunday and carried out a search of the area.
Searches to locate people in trouble were carried out until 4am but no one was found.
A spokesman for Poole Coastguard said: "Teams worked with the ship's crew to find the position of where the flares had been fired from, before conducting a search for people in trouble.
"Red Flares are a maritime distress signal and should only be used in an emergency
"If you see someone in trouble on the coast or at sea dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
