CHRISTCHURCH Quay Splashpark have announced that they are not going to open the park to the public and fear that they will be unable to do so this year.

Although outdoor pools and waterparks have been able to reopen since Saturday July 11, the outdoor play facilities on Christchurch Quomps have said they are not able to meet the government’s current safety guidelines and will remain closed.

Difficulties regarding monitoring visitor capacity at the free water park, as well as ensuring two metre distancing can be maintained at the outdoor facility have led to owners making the executive decision not to open during the summer months.

The water park, run by BCP Council, has said they will provide updates on their situation when they have confirmation on when they are able to reopen safely.

A BCP Council spokesperson said: “We are currently reviewing Government guidance on water-based play facilities, but the focus of that guidance appears to be geared more towards pay on entry pools, rather than free water play facilities.

“Controlling water vapour, visitor numbers and social distancing at these open access sites is much more complex and challenging and a decision has yet to be made if it will be possible this year.”

The Quomps Splash Park and paddling pools in Christchurch typically opens for the new season on the late May bank holiday weekend and is a popular venue for young families since its opening in 2010.

Updates on when the park is due to be reopened will be announced on Christchurch Quay Splashpark’s social media pages and website.
