Concerns for a man's welfare at Portland Bill triggered a search by emergency services.
Police, coastguards, paramedics and a lifeboat crew scoured the area after the alarm was raised at around 10.06pm yesterday.
A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "We were called at 10.06pm on Tuesday July 14 to a report raising concern for the welfare of a man believed to be in the area of Portland Bill.
"Officers attended and carried out searches of the area, with support from the coastguard. The man was located and taken to safety at around 11.30pm. He was given appropriate care."
