POOLE Festival of Running may have been cancelled this year, but in 1990 the event went forward despite driving rains.

Thousands of runners and spectators ignored the torrential downpour to join in the town’s biggest sporting event of the year in Poole Park.

The successful event firmly marked Poole in the top five marathons in the country.

One of the marathon helpers said a London Marathon organiser had been down that day on June 9, and was suitably impressed with what he saw.
