A kitchen went up in flames after a chip pan was left unattended.

Firefighters were called to a house in Broadwindsor shortly after 11.30am this morning.

Crews from Bridport and Beaminster attended and found the fire had started from an unattended chip pan.

The fire alarm sounded and the owner, after realising what had happened, used a towel to cover the fire but not before extensive heat and smoke damage had been caused.

The fire was out when firefighters arrived, however they ensured the scene was safe and then vented the property of smoke.

A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "It’s an important reminder to never leave cooking unattended.

"The owner did the correct thing by using a towel rather than water on the fire and exited the building along with other residence who had exited the building after hearing the fire alarm sound."

The fire service advises against using chip pans at all.

top tips for cooking safely:

  • Keep the oven, hob and grill clean as a build-up of fat or grease can catch fire when hot
  • Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob, and take care if you’re wearing loose clothing
  • Make sure children are never left alone in the kitchen when you’re cooking
  • Saucepan handles left sticking out create a danger – there’s a risk they could be caught, leading to the pans being knocked off the hob
  • Use spark devices to light gas cookers as they are safer than matches and lighters
  • Never leave cooking unattended
  • Keep electrical leads and appliances away from water
  • Avoid cooking if you are tired, have been drinking alcohol or are taking medication that leaves you drowsy
