THIS picture from August 1957 shows the building of Bourne and Hollingsworth under construction.

The face of Southampton was rapidly changing and a new town was being constructed on the debris of an earlier time.

Post-war construction was in full swing in Above Bar more than 60 years ago and names were appearing over new-style shops, many of which have been long forgotten today.

A head-long rush was under way to build a new community fit for the decades ahead and it was taking shape at such a speed that developers were spending £1,000 a day – a huge sum in the 1950s.

Bourne and Hollingsworth opened in 1959 and adopted the name Bournes before closing in 1983.

The site is now occupied by Poundland.
