Emergency repairs to a sewer are progressing in a project which has seen heavy plant and machinery descend on a residential area of Weymouth.

Wessex Water is working at it sewage pumping station off Newstead Road near the Rodwell Trail.

The site works compound extends into Knightsdale Road around the outdoor education centre and into part of the Marsh playing fields.

Engineers are conducting emergency repairs to a sewer and Wessex Water said the compound has been set up to ensure the firm maintains sewerage services while completing repairs as quickly as possible.

There are some parking restrictions in place on Knightsdale Road to enable vehicles to access the compound safely.

Work started at the site towards the end of April when investigations were carried out into the fault. Wessex Water wrote to residents living in the area explaining work was being carried out and apologising fro any inconvenience caused.

The project is likely to be completed by the middle of July.

In a letter to residents when investigations were being carried out, Wessex Water said: "We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by our current activity at Newstead Road Sewage Pumping Station. We’re carrying out investigations to locate a burst on our main sewer pipe. These investigations may also extend into Marsh Fields and the surrounding area.

"There may be increased vehicle and plant movements to and from the pumping station during these works. This is to ensure we maintain sewerage services while we complete a repair as quickly as possible. There may also be some noise disruption, but every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum.

"We shouldn’t need to enter your property but if we do, our staff carry identification which you should ask to see before letting them in."

The firm said it was following the very latest government advice on Covid-19 to protect customers and staff while maintaining its services."
