A FORDINGBRIDGE councillor has called for action over speeding drivers and warned "someone is going to get killed" if nothing is done.

Councillor Nobby Goldsmith raised concerns over the speed of traffic in the high street during a meeting of Fordingbridge Town Council on Wednesday, May 3, which was held virtually over Zoom.

He said: “People have been screaming up and down the road. The other day I was stood at the crossing and a lady came by and didn’t stop - just wasn’t interested at all.

“A couple of years ago the residents of Alderholt managed to get hold of a speed camera from the local police and used it for a week or so. Is there any way we could do that? I would do it.”

“Something needs to be done because someone is going to get killed,” he added.

Councillor Alan Lewendon said: “Hampshire Constabulary do have some speed cameras. They did have some groups formed in various areas where they trained people to use these cameras. I think they are only allowed to take numbers of cars and pass them onto the police.

“You do have the problem though that some people see a speed camera pointed at them and then stop.

“They were available a few years ago. But I haven’t heard anything about these speed watch teams for some time.”

Mayor Edward Hale said: “There are a few groups, as you say, in the local villages. I think you are only allowed to go out and use them if you have had the special training anyway.”

Councillor Goldsmith said: “Something needs to be done. I would be happy to do that, the training.”

Councillor Hale added: “It might be worth following up to see if there is any interest in a Fordingbridge Speedwatch group. I’m not sure if the police are still training people for that.”

The council agreed to contact PCSO Stephen May to see if the speed watch scheme was still an option and then if it was to see if there was an appetite for a group in the town.
