A MAN from Southbourne has been taking on a particularly hairy challenge to fundraise for wildlife rangers in Africa,

Marcus Clarke has been cycling from Southbourne to Sandbanks dressed as a gorilla since the middle of May to support the rangers in Africa who are suffering at the hands of coronavirus.

Since travel restrictions have been in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus, wildlife reservations and its staff are now experiencing a crisis.

Bournemouth Echo:

Marcus, who has a background in conservation, wanted to make his mark fundraising for a cause he is passionate about.

He said: “When you’re fundraising, you can’t expect people to give you money without it involving trials or tribulations. Cycling in a gorilla suit is challenging and visible. My wife suggested I wear the suit.”

So far, Marcus has cycled 330km in the gorilla suit over the course of 11 days, but he plans to continue with the challenge until he attains his goal.

Marcus added: “My goal is to keep riding at least until the end of August as I would love to raise £50,000. I hope to throw in some odd, fun stuff in my cycle rides too.”

The reopening of beach huts along the seafront has resulted in many owners recognising Marcus as he cycles past, cheering and waving at him every time he passes.

He said: “The responses have been broadly positive; you get some good reactions. The challenge is beginning to get some traction and I will hopefully get a big boost in the future.

“The rangers in Africa are out in the sun all day, carrying heavy items. I am trying to add that level of challenge to my fundraiser.”

Marcus has teamed up with Dorset based wildlife conservation charity Tusk Trust to help distribute the funds in places where money is urgently required.
