WEST Dorset women who golf and quilt together have raised £755 to help a charity that supported their beloved late friend.

They made a colourful quilt and raffled it off in memory of Carol Ponchaud, who lost her fight with cancer in October 2019.

Carol and her friends Sue Pollock, Marilyn Wilson and Di Harris would meet together regularly and play golf or they would get together to sew, quilt and chat.

Sue, Marilyn and Di donated the £755 to Go Girls, a cause that supported Carol through her illness.

Dorset-based Go Girls raises awareness of the five gynaecological cancers affecting women. More than 21,000 women are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer annually and sadly 21 women die every day from these cancers.

The draw was due to take place at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club on March 26 but had to be postponed because of the coronavirus lockdown.

Sue, of West Bay, said: "It was only recently with a slight easing of lockdown that we decided to do the draw. We felt that like so many charities across the country whose funds have dried up, it was important to get the money to Go Girls.

"A total of £755 was raised from this raffle - a truly incredible amount which has now gone to Go Girls."

The draw was held in Sue's driveway in compliance with social distancing measures. A neighbour drew the winning ticket while wearing gloves.

The winner was Anna Lennon Smith, a member of Lyme Regis Golf Club, where Carol used to play.

Anna said she was delighted with the news of her win, saying she never wins anything. She has only recently become a member of the golf club as she has relocated from Sydney.

The quilt is 80 inches square and ideal for double or king size beds but can also be draped as a throw on sofas or even used as a wall hanging. It is fully washable and potentially could become a family heirloom.
