COUNCIL chiefs have vowe to continue their crackdown on those camping overnight on Bournemouth beach.

It comes after residents raised concerns over groups continuing to gather and spend the night on the seafront.

BCP seafront rangers and security staff have been patrolling the beach in a bid to stop large gatherings and people camping out.

Now one Hamworthy resident has called on the council to continue taking action.

He spotted through a live video stream of the beach on surf reports and forecast website Magic Seaweed.

He said: “Despite the council promising to clamp down on this people are still camping at the pier and lighting fires.

“Why are these people allowed to blatantly camp in full view at the most popular place in the area? No attempt to hide.

“Why are the authorities not moving them on and fining them?”

The video stream, installed at the Bournemouth Beach Seafront Information Centre, showed a group of around eight with four tents lighting a fire on the beach at 11pm and gathering as a group on recliners and staying overnight before dispersing after 7am.

The Hamworthy resident added: "It makes me angry that we have done so well then we get people coming into the area putting our key workers at risk, trashing our beauty spots, breaking the law by camping on the beach and lighting fires.

“I’m also frustrated that the council and police are doing nothing. Let's face it at the seafront they can access any number of web cams to see what people are doing. I understand that they are stretched but this would be an easy win.

“Mostly I’m frightened to go to the places I love due to crowds being stupid and worried for my wife and daughter who work for the NHS.”

Councillor Lewis Allison, cabinet member for tourism, leisure and communities said: “We have been extremely busy over the last few days with a significant number of individuals in tents being spoken to and/or evicted from the beach.

“Overnight camping is not permitted on our beaches and both our Seafront Rangers and overnight security patrols will continue to advise on this and engage with anyone camping on our beaches where possible.”

Residents in Bournemouth have continued to express their anger after more campers have been spotted staying overnight and lighting fires on Bournemouth beach via online video link.

A group of young people were seen breaking lockdown restrictions by camping on Bournemouth beach, in the shadow of Bournemouth Pier, from Monday June 1 to Tuesday June 2.

The council have said that, although beach patrols have been “extremely busy” due to a rise in visitor numbers, Seafront Rangers and overnight security patrols are continuing to talk to and evict people from the beach.
