A driver who told police his car was 'OK to drive as the smoke disappears when you drive fast' has had it seized by officers and reported to court.

Dorset Police No Excuse Team saw the Peugeot travelling at 96mph and stopped the driver, who was driving 18 miles to work with an oil leak and no driving licence.

A spokesman said: "This vehicle first came to our attention on the Holes Bay Road/A35 roundabout as smoke could be seen coming from the bonnet. We then witnessed it travelling at 96 mph towards Wareham.

"Once stopped we asked the driver about the smoke and speed and he replied, 'Sorry we are late for work, it has an oil leak but it's OK to drive as the smoke disappears when you drive fast'. Why he thought that was a good idea is beyond us.

"The driver then showed us the engine covered in oil and the puddle on the floor. Again he then tried persuading us it was still OK to drive and he promised to take it to a garage as soon as possible to fix it.

"However to make things worse when we checked his licence we noted he didn't have one.

"We then explained the car was being seized and he stated that wasn't fair as it costs too much money to collect.

"The driver was reported to court and another dangerous unroadworthy vehicle taken off our roads."
