Fast food lovers hoping to return to the golden arches this week could be in for a long wait, with Weymouth's McDonald's store set to be potentially the busiest in the country, it has been claimed.

McDonald’s has announced that all of its Drive Thrus will begin opening this week after a two-month hiatus, and Weymouth's Jubilee Close store has been confirmed to open today.

However, a new study has claimed the Weymouth Drive Thru in Jubilee Close could be the busiest in the country. Using new DVLA data detailing car registrations across the UK and data from the McDonald’s store checker, Marmalade, a leading provider of insurance and cars for young drivers, has predicted the busiest Drive Thrus in the UK.

In the latest available data from the DVLA, 123,909 cars were licensed in the DT postcode sector by the end of 2019. With the Jubilee Close store being the only McDonald's store with a Drive Thru in the DT postcode area, Marmalade predicts this will make it the busiest in the country.

Every Drive Thru in the UK and Ireland will reopen by Thursday this week, but with a number of safety measures in place.

There will be a capped spend of £25 per car, Perspex screens at Drive Thru windows and employees will be wearing protective equipment. Social distancing will be introduced in the kitchens as restaurants return with smaller teams, offering a limited menu.

A McDonald's spokesperson said: "With fewer employees working in our kitchens and service areas, our teams will still need your patience and support as they continue to adjust to the new ways of working. Face coverings, gloves, Perspex screens and new safety and hygiene processes mean it will look different, it will take a little longer and as we have seen in the pilot restaurants, we expect demand will be high. Please bear with us, we will continue to put our people first – their safety is our priority.

"In the last week, on occasion, we have taken the decision to close Drive Thru lanes where demand has impacted local communities or the safety of our people or customers. We will continue to work with local authorities and the police as we extend our reopening plans. With smaller teams, we will still be offering a limited menu over reduced hours, and we ask that you make contactless payments and limit your spend to £25.

"We are continuing to review these measures as we reopen, but for now, these restrictions remain in place to help our employees, customers and delivery partner couriers to remain safe."

McDonald's will release the locations of the reopening restaurants on the morning of each day.
