CHRISTCHURCH market is open for business again after a lockdown break of more than two months.

The popular outdoor market was able to operate for the first time yesterday following a relaxation of lockdown rules.

There were not as many stalls and the usual large crowds of people were still absent.

But those who did turn up were pleased to see the return of the weekly Monday occasion.

The high street was closed as usual and a wide variety of stalls were spread out from one end of the street to the other.

The market consisted of 14 stalls including plants, carpets, shoes, bedding and fruit and vegetables. There was even a busker.

All were insisting customers observed social distancing guidelines with many offering hand sanitiser and the chance to use contactless payment.

One stallholder said: "I am very happy with how it's going because I was a bit nervous about it to be honest.

"I wasn't sure how many people to expect and wondered if those who came along would respect social distancing.

"I thought it might feel a bit stressful but it's completely the opposite. People seem to be very chilled, maybe it's because it's such a beautiful day."

Some market visitors took advantage of the chance to catch up with old friends enjoying coffee at tables and chairs in the street.

Many were also visiting some of the indoor shops already open in the town centre.

They include Marks and Spencer Food and Poundland.

Stan Hopkins, who lives in Burton, said: "I've been waiting weeks for this. A lot of people in Christchurch look forward to the market every week and we've all been stuck indoors for such a long time that's it's lovely to get out.

"People seem to be behaving very sensibly by keeping out of each other's way. I think everyone knows that we have to do as we're told or the government will close everything again."

The decision to open Christchurch Market was taken after discussions between BCP Council officers and operators Southern Market Traders.

Boscombe market, which is run by the same operator, is also set to return this week on Thursday, while Poole is still under consideration due to the challenges around social distancing at the site.

BCP Council said the markets in Boscombe and Christchurch can resume with a number of safety measures in place.
