FAITHWORKS Wessex and YMCA Bournemouth have come together to launch a new Payer Line service for those wishing to pray during the current lockdown.

The new service, which is manned from Monday to Sunday 7am to 10pm, is hoped to answer the call that one in 20 people have started prayer during the coronavirus, a survey published by the charity Tearfund suggests.

In the background of the ongoing pandemic, church leaders have been in discussion with Christian NGOs about how to provide support during this crisis.

Chief Executive, Faithworks Wessex Alistair Doxat-Purser said: “Having spoken to some vulnerable people in the community, we noticed that there may well be people who are scared about what is going on and are isolated and don’t social media or access to the internet

“People may have a loved one on hospital, not necessarily Covid-19 related, that they are worried about and may not have anyone to talk to about it.

“We want to use it a coming along side, an additional service that can help with people’s mental state and peace of mind.”

The Pray Line service is based on a success of Trypraying, a resource founded in Edinburgh for people with no church connection or interest, but open to find out about God.

With many across the country turning to prayer during lockdown, the Christian charity hope their service can provide some solace for people during this time of uncertainty.

Alistair added: “Its is important because during the current crisis, a large proportion of people, regardless of their beliefs or even if they have no beliefs, have turned to prayer.

“We want to make that available for people, so people can still talk to people and continue to stay safe.

“It seems as though the immediate crisis has almost passed but that doesn’t mean that we are in the clear as new problems will begin coming up, such as uncertainty as to when the furlough scheme will end and people’s jobs put at risk.”

The Pray Line phoneline is available from Monday to Sunday 7am to 10pm, with volunteers from local churches available to pray with or for individuals.

Rev Dr Gareth Sherwood CEO of Bournemouth YMCA added: "People need physical, mental and spiritual support.

“The Prayer Line is a much-needed resource for those seeking someone to stand with them in prayer over their lives or for loved ones.

“The YMCA is glad to partner with churches and faith organisations to play a critical role in the setup and delivery of this service."
