THE resurfacing of a main road in Bournemouth have been postponed.

Work was due to begin in Wallisdown Road on Saturday as part of BCP Council's major series of works.

A full closure was scheduled to be in place for two and half weeks from Boundary Roundabout to Fern Barrow.

Engineers were set to carry out a full depth reconstruction of the existing road, which is reportedly approaching the end of its useable lifespan.

However, the council has postponed until the situation with coronavirus changes.

Councillor Andy Hadley, cabinet member for transport and infrastructure at BCP Council, said: “In agreement with contractors, the decision was made to postpone the planned closure of Wallisdown Road which was due to take place from April 4 for two and half weeks, until further notice.

“Whilst it would be great to complete this major phase with so many people staying at home, we believe this is an appropriate response due to the challenge of adhering to current social distancing and unnecessary travel guidelines in what would be a busy and active working environment.

"The situation is rapidly changing and we are exploring options which may enable us to progress with the planned carriageway reconstruction in the future. We’ll update residents and local businesses as soon as possible.

“From Tuesday 7 April, a team are able to work on kerbing, footway and signage works and these require temporary one way traffic lights between Talbot Drive and Wallisdown Road roundabout.

“Please stay at home, unless your journey is absolutely essential.’’
