AN event on Poole Quay to mark VE Day has been postponed until the summer.

The Society for Poole organisation had organised the event, which would have also marked VJ Day, with the Royal British Legion.

It was due to take place on May 8, but has been put on hold while the lockdown across the UK remains in force.

A spokesman for the Society for Poole said: "Poole had a significant role to play in the war, from hosting the flying boats, to supplying 60 Dunkirk boats, being a base for small raiding parties who attacked the French coast and, of course being the 3rd largest embarkation port for the D-Day landings and indeed building many of the landing craft used.

"The information boards will however still be erected down the high street and along the quay. These will tell the story of Poole’s involvement in the war from 1939 until its conclusion in 1945.

"The walking history tours, parade of veterans and a marching band as well as singers in period costumes, a fun fair and vintage vehicles on the quay will now take place in the sun on the 16th August – the day after VJ Day."
