A MASSIVE thanks has to go to Looking Back reader Peter Harley who has shared this jolly picture of the flooding in Weymouth in 1955.

It's an uplifting picture that reminds us that in these troubled times while the UK is under lockdown that perhaps we can find something to smile about.

With the water ankle deep in Clifton Place, where Mr Harley used to live, we can see a resident making music on an accordion with a smile on her face. Meanwhile Mr Harley's father is whistling along to the music and his mother is looking out of the window singing along.

Mr Harley tells us: "I was born at number 2, Clifton Place in 1948, having fond memories as a child, one of which when going downstairs in the morning and watching a dustpan float by at the bottom.

"Everyone was in good spirits, my Dad was whistling while Mrs Brown was playing her accordion, mum looking out of the front room window singing along with Mr and Mrs Symmes next door all standing in flood water.

"Mrs Reed's newsagents in Park Street opposite Clifton Place, whose stock was damaged, still needed her newspapers delivered."

Mr Harley also wanted us to know that in the original picture we published of Clifton Place he recognised Mrs Reed's shop at the top of the picture and resident Nigel Symme on the left hand side.

*Thanks to Mr Harley for showing us there can be a moment of levity in difficult time.
