Weymouth Town Council is today celebrating one year since it first came into operation.

The anniversary is marked amid lockdown restrictions during the coronavirus crisis.

The council says these are difficult times for everyone, but it is here to help where it can.

In the past year, the council has taken on local services including parks, gardens, open spaces, cemeteries, allotments, beach, community development and town centre work, along with pushing forward new projects like the beach front toilets, seafront lighting and Tumbledown Farm.

Some major achievements over the past twelve months include:

* Declaring a climate change emergency in July 2019 and working on measures to address the Town Council’s impact on the environment

* Weymouth Beach being awarded the Blue Flag and Seaside Awards

* Greenhill and Sandsfoot Gardens being awarded the Green Flag

* Weymouth Town Centre being awarded the Purple Flag

* Being recognised by the Civic Society Award for planting schemes at Greenhill, Sandsfoot and Radipole Gardens

* Enabling and supporting more than 150 events

* Engaging more than 7,000 members of public with the work of the town council

Town Clerk, Jane Biscombe said, “I am extremely proud of the council’s achievements in the last twelve months.

"None of our success would have been possible without the dedicated staff team, committed councillors, supportive partners and trusting residents, who continue to support the communities of Weymouth through the current difficult times.”
