A CAR driver who collided with a pedestrian in a Bournemouth road and failed to stop at the scene has been sentenced after being convicted while being absent from court.

Istvan Komoroczki was sentenced at Poole Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, March 12, in relation to a crash that took place in Ashley Road in June last year.

This came after the charges against him had been proved in his absence at a previous hearing in January this year.

Police were called to a report of the collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Saturday, June 29, 2019.

It was reported that the car involved, later identified as a Volkswagen Sharan, had failed to stop at the scene.

Komoroczki, 53, attended a voluntary interview with police and he was subsequently issued with a postal requisition for offences of driving without due care and attention, failing to stop and failing to report a road accident. However, he was absent from court on January 21 and magistrates convicted him of the three charges.

He was fined £400 and was ordered to pay £85 costs and a £40 surcharge for failing to stop. His driving record was also endorsed with nine points.

Komoroczki, of Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, also received a £400 fine for driving without due care and attention, while he received no separate penalty for failing to report the road collision.

A Dorset Police spokesman said: “We were called to a report of a collision on Ashley Road in Bournemouth involving a car and a pedestrian. It was reported that the car involved had failed to stop at the scene. Officers attended and the pedestrian, a man aged in his 30s, did not require an ambulance but attended hospital as a precaution after sustaining minor injuries.

“Following enquiries the vehicle involved, a silver Volkswagen Sharan, was identified and a 53-year-old Bournemouth man attended for voluntary police interview. He was issued with a postal requisition for driving without due care and attention, failing to stop and failing to report a road accident.”
