MOTORISTS faced delays on the road as an abnormal load weighing a staggering 273 tonnes travelled from Poole Port to Wytch Farm.

Supported by officers from Dorset Police's traffic unit, the haul, which measured an overall length of 73 meters and width of 5.6 metres set off from the docks shortly after 9am.

The convoy, which had to travel at a maximum speed of 12mph, travelled along Blandford Road, the A35 and the A351 to make it to the oil rig in Purbeck.

Along its journey, many residents managed took to the pavements to take pictures and videos of the unique collection of vehicles.

It took the abnormal load around four hours to get to its destination off the main carriageway.

Dorset Traffic Cops had warned drivers in advanced to expect delays but many were still caught in traffic queues behind the haul.

Residents reported that the convoy had to overcome some difficulties on the roads when travelling through Holten Heath but it was soon on the move again.

Motorists have been advised that they are set to face further disruption next Monday at the same time and on the same route due to a similar operation.
