A LARGE multi-agency emergency service response was required to rescue a man after he fell 30m down a Bournemouth cliff and suffered a suspected broken shoulder.

Police, fire, ambulance and coastguard services worked together to deal with the incident off Boscombe Overcliff Drive, east of Manor Steps, on Wednesday afternoon.

Following an assessment of the man by a coastguard technician and paramedics, the coastguard helicopter was called, however, the casualty could not be extracted using the helicopter due to the location of nearby beach huts.

It was reported that the man had been on the cliff for more than an hour when he was assessed.

He had sustained a suspected broken or dislocated shoulder, was in a lot of pain and also cold, a coastguard spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Southbourne Coastguard said: "With no other option the difficult extraction was made utilising both rescue technicians and a rescue stretcher up the cliff and into the care of an awaiting South Western Ambulance Service ambulance."

Southbourne Coastguard led the operation, with support from teams from Poole and Lymington, after being called to the scene by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. This followed contact from Dorset Police shortly after 4pm.

A spokesperson for Poole Coastguard said: "With discussions with the winch/paramedic, it was agreed the safest way to recover the casualty was by cliff rescue by the coastguard rescue teams.

"With the casualty safely on the cliff, they were transport to hospital."
