The storm has been christened 'Storm Jorge' by the Spanish meteorological service.

Residents who live near the coast should pay particular attention to sea spray and large waves, which could cause hazards on roads and footpaths.

Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are also likely, as are delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

Householders are also advised to secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown into windows, and make sure windows and doors are securely closed.

Meanwhile, an Environment Agency flood alert is currently in force for rivers and streams in Weymouth. Residents are advised to be prepared for the possibility of flooding.

River levels are 'high but steady' at the Broadwey river gauge as a result of the ground being saturated and previous rainfall, and are likely to remain high over the next few days amid further rain.

There is a possibility of flooding for the River Wey to Radipole Lake, Preston Brook and River Jordan.

Residents are advised to avoid using low lying footpaths near watercourses.
