WOMEN are to be asked for their views on how to improve community facilities and services as International Women's Day is celebrated in Dorset.

A street consultation is being held in Dorchester next month, hosted by Women’s Action Network Dorset (WAND) and the Dorchester Feminist Group. The groups are joining forces in a bid to find out how the area could be made a better place to live and work for women in the community.

The activity takes place on Saturday March 7. To make your voice heard, head to South Street, where representatives will be based in a gazebo outside Barclay's Bank from 10am until 3pm.

After the event, the results of the survey will be analysed by the groups, with the findings to be published on WAND’s website and social media pages.

A spokesperson said: "What new facilities, activities, opportunities or support would you like to see? Come and tell us.

"The report we write will also be used to persuade local organisations, such as councils, service providers and community organisations, to listen to women’s feedback and take up your ideas.

"The more feedback and ideas we have, the better."

As well as seeking views, organisers say they are also working to create a directory of local organisations to help signpost women towards support services and useful organisations in the county.

The event has been timed to coincide with International Women’s Day, which is observed every year on March 8. The purpose of International Women's Day is to celebrate women's achievements, and call for progress towards achieving gender equality.

Established in 2010, WAND is a community voluntary organisation that promotes women's rights and wellbeing and aims to offer opportunities for women to network, socialise and share their skills with one another.

Previously the group has organised Reclaim the Night marches and Dorset Women’s Day - helping to raise money for crucial services in the county.

Dorchester Feminist Group is an informal, open group for mutual support, discussion and actioning of feminist and women-focused political issues.
