A MAN who launched an explosive rage with two baseball bats during a row with his partner has appeared at court.

Adam Sage wielded one bat during the onslaught with such force it 'split in half', a court heard yesterday.

The 30-year-old of Sandy Lane, Oxford was set to stand trial at Oxford Crown Court today for assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

After prosecutors dropped the case because there was 'no prospect of conviction' Sage was instead set to sentenced after admitting criminal damage.

Outlining the case prosecutor Lee Harris said the outburst took place at an Oxford address on May 26 last year.

Sage and his victim had been in a relationship together for two years until they split up in December 2018.

They continued to see each other despite the split and on the day of the incident - at about 3am - Sage was trying to check her mobile phone to find out if she had started another relationship.

A row ensued and Sage went upstairs and retrieved two baseball bats.

He then came back downstairs and proceeded to 'smash up' a number of items in the house.

Sage broke items including a TV, a TV stand, and a mirror, shards of which landed in a baby car seat.

Prosecutors said one bat was wielded with such force it broke and split in half.

The total value of the damage, including repair labour costs, was valued at about £1,000.

After hearing the facts behind the case presiding Judge Peter Ross asked for a pre-sentence report to be carried out.

That report - by the National Probation Service - will explore all sentencing options.

Adjourning the case Judge Ross warned Sage that 'all options are open including custody' for the offence.

The final sentencing hearing will be held at the same court on march 27 and Sage was released on bail.
