The body of a man found on land at Sand Gate Marsh, yesterday afternoon has been formally identified as Arthur Wilson, 86, of Cark, Cartmel.

Mr Wilson, who suffers from dementia, was last seen at his home address in the Cark area of Cartmel at around 1am yesterday morning,

There are no suspicious circumstances at this stage.

A file will be prepared for the coroner.

Police would like to thank Bay Search and Rescue, NPAS, Cumbria Fire & Rescue, Coastguard and Mountain Rescue as well as the many local residents who came to volunteer to search for Mr Wilson.

They also thank the many people who shared the appeal for information on social media.

Bay Search and Rescue posted a tribute online: "Bay Search and Rescue would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Arthur Wilson, who was found after an extensive search on Sandgate Marshes yesterday afternoon, following a multiagency search.

"Following a discussion with a local farmer, the decision to undertake a second search of the area was commenced at low water, and Mr Wilson’s body was discovered soon after."
