A GROUP of students from Twynham School have been named as overall winners of a national design competition hosted by the Design Museum.

Design Cubes was the team name for students Toby, Jemma, Rachel and Amillie, with support from their teacher Amanda Britton, Head of Design and Technology at Twynham School.

The quartet have been announced as champions of the Design Museum’s 10th national design and enterprise challenge supported by Deutsche Bank’s global youth engagement programme Born to Be.

The team of Year 9 students were awarded the trophy at a celebration event at the Design Museum on Thursday February 13 for their original product design, intended to combat ‘creative block’.

Lareena Hilton, Global Head of Brand Communications & CSR at Deutsche Bank said: “We are always impressed with the quality of the student ideas submitted for Design Ventura and this year was no exception.

“The submission from Twynham School showcased many of the design and business skills we are looking to develop in students through Design Ventura: ingenuity, creativity, teamwork, an awareness of sustainability and an entrepreneurial spirit.

“The skills they gain help open their career pathways and contribute to longer-term community sustainability as well as economic growth.”

Students aged thirteen to sixteen, were given a brief set by Turner-prize winning design collective Assemble to design a new product that improves an aspect of everyday life for one of three target audiences - families, adult design enthusiasts or young people and students.

Teams were also challenged to consider manufacturing, budgeting, and sustainability.

Over three hundred secondary schools across the UK and beyond participated in the Design Museum’s flagship learning programme.

The top 10 product designs from schools across the UK are now on display in a free exhibition at the Design Museum, which also showcases the student prototypes and final winning products from the past decade of Design Ventura.

The overall winner was selected from a shortlist of ten school teams who pitched their concept to a panel of leading design and business experts at a special pitching event last year.

The winning team will begin working with a design agency to develop their product concept for manufacture and launch in the Design Museum shop this June.

Project Manager at Design Ventura Poppy Parry said: “‘Design Cubes is a unique and creative response to the Design Ventura brief that will appeal to both design enthusiasts and students.

“We look forward to using the game as an icebreaker in our school workshops and staff meetings.”
