You Do Not Have To Be Alone was set up in September 2019 by Rodney Marlow with the aim of providing support for individuals with depression.

Having been a Bournemouth resident all his life, Rodney witnessed the increase in local suicides over the years, making him consider what could be done to help those struggling with their mental health.

He explained: "Last July I was in a similar situation to plenty of other people. I was surrounded by loving friends and family but still felt so alone. There are people out there who feel alone and don't have anyone.

"I wanted to make a difference to those people."

The aim of the group is to help prevent suicide by providing support through the group, in whatever way possible.

You Do Not Have To Be Alone meets on the first Sunday of every month for a coffee morning and chat.

One of their upcoming events is a beach walk and litter pick on February 1.

Rodney hopes to achieve many things through this walk: "This beach walk will help the environment, keep the town clean and raise awareness of the group. It will do three things in one go.

"As a group, people support each other. Holding events gets people out and about and meeting new people."

The group's rapid expansion over four months has resulted in people from all over the world joining the group.

Rodney has gained members from Australia, Spain, America and Canada, as well as those in Bournemouth and surrounding areas.

The success of the group has also prompted Rodney to consider his next plan of action for You Do Not Have To Be Alone.

He said: "I want to reach out further and help more people, including those who are homeless. I also want to get a charity status. Having that will make it easier for fundraising.

"If the group is a registered charity by the end of the year, I will be happy."

The group's upcoming beach walk on February 1 will be taking place on Southbourne Cliffs.

The meeting point is the Fisherman's Walk Cliff Lift at 10am.
