It’s the dinner to celebrate the life and poetry of Robert Burns.
Burns Night suppers are usually held near the poet’s birthday of January 25, and often include a haggis, whisky, bagpipes and the recitation of Burns’ poetry.
Burns' friends held the first dinner on July 21, 1801 at Burns Cottage, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The occasion marked the fifth anniversary of his death in 1796.
The occasions moved to coincide with the poet's birthday when a piper usually greets the guests and a host says a few words. Once the guests are seated grace is said, usually using the Selkirk Grace.
