A site is yet to be confirmed for a new tip in south Warrington to serve the proposed ‘garden suburb’ put forward in the emerging local plan.

The town’s three community recycling centres are located in Stockton Heath, on Sandy Lane, Gatewarth, on Barnard Street, and Woolston, on New Cut Lane.

As previously confirmed, land for a fit-for-purpose recycling centre in the south of the borough will be allocated in the local plan.

But, last year, council leader Cllr Russ Bowden admitted the new facility might not be operating before the Stockton Heath facility shuts.

The council has provided an update on the situation.

A spokesman said: “The draft local plan includes a requirement for a community recycling centre to be provided to serve the garden suburb and the wider south Warrington area. No site has yet been confirmed.

“In addition, the draft local plan also includes a policy to assess proposals for new waste management facilities in order to ensure the protection of the environment and public amenity.

“There is currently no date set for the Stockton Heath site to close.”
