A HAMPSHIRE grandad has become an internet sensation after completing a challenge that has defeated people less than half his age.

A video of nimble-fingered Nigel King taking part in TikTok's hand emoji challenge has been viewed by more than ten million people in just three days.

His granddaughter, Chloe Perkins, 22, of Hedge End, urged him to take part and uploaded a video which has now gone viral.

People taking part in the challenge are confronted by a series of hand emojis which appear on the screen, including a peace sign and a thumbs-up gesture.

They have to replicate the emojis with their hands - in the same order in which they appear.

Chloe, who works for Carnival Cruises in Southampton, uploaded a video of Mr King replicating nine emojis in just 15 seconds.

She was amazed when she discovered it had been viewed more than ten million times.

Chloe said: "My partner couldn't do the last part of the challenge but I was going to see my grandad and he decided he wanted to do it."

Asked why her video had proved so popular she added: "I think it's his age. He's does it so smoothly and he's smiling - people just love it."

Mr King, 72, of Townhill Park, Southampton, revealed the success of his success, saying he had always used his hands.

"I used to do all sorts of stuff - I used to be a fitter in the docks," he said.

Mr King said he was astonished when he discovered the video had been viewed more than 600,000 times, adding: "It just got more and more - it's gone bananas."

Chloe's dad, Steve Perkins, added: "Her boyfriend couldn't do it but Chloe was going to see her grandad and asked him to try instead - he's always up for a challenge.

"It's such a hard thing to do. I couldn't do it - your fingers end up in knots - but it looked as if it came naturally to him."
