A CATHOLIC primary school in Bournemouth has been rated as Good just two years after leaders were told to make improvements.

Christ the King Catholic Primary School in Durdells Avenue in Kinson was visited by Ofsted inspectors last month and their report has just been published.

The school has 362 pupils between the ages of three and 11 and is part of the Plymouth CAST multi-academy trust.

Lead inspector Stewart Gale said: "Staff have high expectations and want every pupil to achieve well, and they do. Pupils find the activities available to them exciting.

"Pupils feel valued in this happy and safe school. The school is calm and orderly. There are opportunities for all pupils to find some extra peace and quiet."

Inspectors praised the school's approach to reading and said it is at the heart of everything the school does.

They added: "Pupils say that reading lessons are fun. Inspirational talks from visiting authors promote further the love of reading."

Safeguarding at the school was also praised, as was the school's values of forgiveness and integrity.

"Pupils show respect for others and the school's rules. They understand how rules make the school a better place.

"By the time they leave, pupils are confident and well-equipped for the next stage of their education an to be positive citizens.

"Leaders are uncompromising in keeping pupils safe."

The school has been urged to make improvements to the teaching of mathematics "to ensure that the building blocks of learning are identified."

Leaders have also been asked to ensure the phonics programme is ambitious enough to hep the lowest-achieving pupils to catch up.

Inspectors worked with senior staff during the inspection and also met with trustees, governors, staff and pupils. The view of parents were also sought.
