ANIMAL training and behaviour experts from a dog training company have given their top five tips for pet owners to stay safe whilst walking their dog during the darker nights.

Company of Animals have advised walkers to remain easily seen by wrapping up warm in a high-vis jacket or waistcoat.

They have also suggested giving the dog reflective accessories to wear, such as collars and leads featuring reflective strips.

The experts say that owners should try to walk in well-lit areas near main roads, but in areas with little or no lighting, a head or hand torch - with well-charged batteries - should be worn.

And as well as torches, it is also suggested that owners carry phones during a walk, in case of an emergency.

Other advice includes taking a lead and to meet up with friends to help stay safe during the darker mornings and nights.

Experts have said that it is always advised to use a lead when it is dark or when visibility is reduced, especially when walking along a road.

Meeting with friends can give an owner and their pet the opportunity to socialise with others, according to the animal experts.

They also suggested to make the most of daylight, or to play games indoors to keep pets “stimulated and happy”.

A spokesperson for Company of Animals said: “If your walks are reduced during the week due to the darker mornings and evenings, then make the most of the daylight when you have the opportunity.

"This could be a longer walk during the weekend or whenever you have spare time.

“And if some of your walks are reduced, there are plenty of games you can play indoors to keep your pet stimulated and happy.

They added: "Try doggy brain-training, which works wonders for burning off energy.

"A puzzle feeder such as the Green Slow Feeder is another great way to provide some extra mental stimulation for your dog whilst indoors.

"So, while it is very important to stay safe this winter, the darker nights shouldn’t prevent your dog from getting all the exercise they need.”
