A CRAZY race down Wimborne’s High Street gave a new meaning to the term tyre pressure.
The event was launched by Wimborne Youth Club as part of their club week.
The pressure was on for the five teams who took part in rolling inflated tractor inner tubes up and down the road and through an obstacle built with milk crates, ramps and archways.
After three heats on October 18, 1979, the event was won by Wimborne Playschool, who beat the town’s solicitors in the final.
The winning team – Nick Hawkes, Mike and Sandie Haskell, Cherry Cockcroft, Dave Wathen and Margaret Lawrence – were runners-up in the previous year’s event, a hobby horse race.
Other teams involved were from Wimborne Youth Club, The Minster Youth Organisation Quest, and the Wimborne Journal.
