THIRTY years ago the pupils of one Dorset school were quick to deliver their verdict on the newly privatised school dinner service.

Children, staff and parents at The Grange School in Christchurch appeared very unhappy with the new catering system.

“I only eat here because I get a free meal ticket but I have to borrow money off my friend because the 92 pence ticket is not enough,” said 15-year-old Michaela Bonaffini as she prodded at her half eaten bowl of cold ravioli.

Her friend Clare Tilly, also 15, eating sausage roll and chips said: “We get a lot less for a lot more.”

Second year pupil, 12-year-old Michael Treadwell, eating beans and chips, said he still felt hungry after a school dinner.

Head teacher Terry Jackson said the number of children having school dinner had dropped significantly.
