AN ARTIST from Bournemouth is due to feature in the new series of Landscape Artist of the Year on Sky Arts.

Peter Alcock, 55, was included as one of the Wildcard artists and was invited to Plymouth where he and the other artists painted a landscape painting of Plymouth Hoe.

The programme, hosted by actor Stephen Mangan and presenter Joan Bakewell, visits various parts of the country in the hunt for nation’s best landscape artist.

Peter said: “When I was lucky enough to be chosen as a wildcard, I felt so happy and proud as my family was, I must admit, a bit nervous as well.

“On the day, I started off a bit nervous but once I settled down everything went well. I loved the well-chosen location and film crew and judges made the day a very enjoyable experience.”

Peter has been painting and drawing for the last 35 years but, thanks to the guidance of an art tutor, he has only been seriously committed to his devotion for the last five.

The winning artist will go through to the semi-final and get one step closer to claiming the prize, a £10,000 commission to create a landscape artwork of Venice for the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects.

Peter continued: “I was amazed at the standard and different styles of my fellow artist and I am really looking forward to the new series very soon.

“This experience has helped to push me to my next level and now I am looking forward to submitting my work for 2020 landscape series. To sum it up, it was a privilege taking part in the show and I really enjoyed the experience.”

This is the fifth series of the show, having first aired four years ago following the enormous success of Sky’s Portrait Artist of the Year back in 2013.

Presenter Stephen Mangan said: "I have the unbelievable pleasure of visiting some of the most beautiful and picturesque spots in the country and watching a bunch of talented artists produce works of art. It’s tough but somebody’s got to do it."
