The Puddletown Bypass was closed for several hours after a car towing a boat crashed into a central reservation.
Dorset Police were called at 8.40am on Saturday to reports that a Land Rover towing a boat had collided with the barrier.
A photo from Dorset Traffic Cops shows the car entangled in cables.
The road (A35) was fully closed westbound between the Affpuddle and Puddletown turn-offs earlier this morning following the collision, which led to heavy traffic.
This was reduced to one lane closure in both directions for several hours while police dealt with the "complicated" incident.
The road has now reopened.
A spokesman for Dorset Traffic Cops said: "These wires are under tension and designed to stop vehicles crossing the central reservation.
"They can't be cut and require specialist kit to loosen them.
"Thank you to all drivers for their patience whilst we dealt with this complicated incident."
