THE FAMILY of a talented golfer, who died in 2012, has helped to raise over £79,000 for Bournemouth Hospital Charity through four annual memorial golf tournaments.

The fourth Ben Harvey memorial golf day was held in July at the Dudsbury Golf Club with 50 teams and seven junior teams playing on the day.

This year’s golf day raised over £19,000 for Bournemouth Hospital Charity, specifically for the Hospital’s Oncology unit where Ben was treated.

Sue Harvey, Ben’s mum, said “We are overwhelmed with the sum raised and the amount of people who participated and supported the event.

“Along with the teams, there have been many donations from companies by way of prizes to be raffled or auctioned on the day as well as hole sponsors. A huge thank you to all that have donated as well as the many helpers on the day and Dudsbury golf club for being great hosts.”

Ben, who died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 28, was a much-loved and respected Dorset and England Boys golf international, described as a great role model and a true champion.

The family have chosen to give the £79,000 raised to the Oncology unit so they can continue to provide the excellent standard of care to cancer patients.

Marie Miller, Cancer Care Matron at Royal Bournemouth hospital said: “The Ben Harvey memorial golf days have been fantastic days, raising a vast amount of money to support the cancer patients at our Hospital.

“The fundraising has supported the refurbishment of the inpatient ward, access for patients to free Wi-Fi on the Haematology and Oncology Day unit, purchased furniture and equipment and supported the complementary therapy service.

“With this fundraising support we are able to provide services that enhance the patient journey at a very difficult time. We are very grateful to Ben’s family for this ongoing support.”
