A BOURNEMOUTH boy who suffered a devastating brain injury at birth has completed a triathlon.

James Scammell, nine, was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy as a baby. Doctors told his family he may never even be able to sit up.

However. the brave youngster has now finished a section of the Superhero Series Triathlon.

He took part in the event's 'celebrity race' by riding 3km, while his team captain – and Invictus Games medallist Zoe Williams – swam 150m. Their teammate Ben Harris, 44, completed the final 1km run or wheelchair push.

Andrew Scammell, James’ dad, said: “I am so proud of what he has accomplished by owning cerebral palsy and doing the celebrity triathlon 3k bike ride and then his own personal challenge of a triathlon of his own.

"He finished without any aid and powered through. He's a true inspiration to all that know him. I've got a glow of pure pride from everyone cheering him on.”

The superhero series triathlon is an annual event which celebrates all ages and disabilities allowing everyone to be included, held this year on August 17 at Dorney Lake in Windsor.
