THERE'S a weather warning for heavy rain today – and government officials have warned residents and business owners around Poole Harbour to 'take immediate action' over the possibility of flooding.

The flooding warning, initially put in place yesterday, has been extended to noon today.

A spokesperson from the government's flood information service said: "Poole Harbour at West Quay and Lower Hamworthy will be affected by high water levels expected as a result of high tides.

"Consequently, flooding of property and roads is possible.

"The time of high water for which this warning applies is 12noon today.

"We believe there is a possibility of flooding for Lower Hamworthy and areas of Poole from Old Town including areas by the lifting bridge, Quay Road, Shore Road and Branksea Avenue in Hamworthy.

"We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Please stay away from large waves as they are dangerous."

A yellow warning – meaning flooding is possible – has been issued for Portland, Swanage and the east coast of Dorset from Christchurch to Weymouth. Officials say there will be sea spray and 'wave action'.

"Flooding to properties, roads and farmland is possible at these times. However, conditions may apply one to two hours either side of the high tide," the spokesperson said.

"We believe there is a possibility of flooding for Castletown, Portland, Weymouth, Preston Beach, Swanage, Studland Bay, Sandbanks, Poole Harbour, Bournemouth Beach, Hengistbury Head and Christchurch Harbour."
