A MAN who suffered swallowing difficulties died after choking at his home in Ferndown, an inquest heard on Monday.

Benjamin Haysom, of Lockyers Drive in Ferndown, was admitted to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital on August 27 in cardiac arrest.

The 41-year-old died on August 30.

An inquest into his death was opened and adjourned at the coroner's court in Bournemouth. It was heard that Mr Haysom had previously had a tracheotomy after suffering with pancreatitis. He had also suffered a stroke previously.

Coroner's officer Ken McEwan said: "He had some difficulties swallowing but continued to eat a normal diet while aware of the risks."

A post-mortem examination was not carried out, but a doctor provided a provisional cause of death as hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy – a type of brain damage which occurs through a lack of oxygen and blood – caused by a cardiac arrest and choking.

A secondary cause of death was given as a stroke.

A full inquest will take place in March next year.
