A PERSON has died after they were hit by a train on the track near Poole station.

A spokesperson from British Transport Police said: "Officers were called at 8.48am to an area of railway near High Street, Poole, following a report of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended.

"However, a person has sadly since been pronounced dead.

"Officers are working to establish the person’s identity and inform their next of kin."

The force sent their own forensics officers to the area, it is understood. Officers wearing white suits could be seen on the tracks this morning.

The air ambulance landed at Baiter Park. Paramedics, police officers and fire crews were also called to the scene.

Despite their efforts, the casualty could not be saved.

Rail services have been at a standstill for much of the day. All lines have now reopened, but trains travelling between Bournemouth and Wareham may be cancelled, delayed or revised for a while longer.

This morning, a spokesperson from South Western Railway said: "We have received reports that a person has been struck by a train between Bournemouth and Poole.

"Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident.

"In order to allow emergency services access to the railway, all power to the track will need to be switched off."
