Domestic pigs roam the roadside near to Burley on the first day of Pannage, or 'Common of mast', where the animals are allowed to wander in the New Forest
VISITORS travelling to the New Forest for the next six weeks might spot a historic tradition.
Commoners practise their right of mast by turning pigs out each autumn for six weeks as part of 'pannage season'.
The event – which begins today – allows the creatures to hoover up fallen acorns, which are poisonous to ponies and cattle.
This acorn diet gives pannage pork a full flavour.
Anyone who spots the pigs is asked not to approach or touch the creatures.
