MORE than 1,000 horse lovers trotted to King’s Park, Boscombe, for the sixth annual horse show on August 19, 1979.

There were nearly 300 horses on the site, taking part in a variety of events including show jumping and a fancy dress competition.

One attraction was in the private driving class for pony and trap owners.

The three entrants took a police-escorted drive to Hengistbury Head via Gloucester Road and the Boscombe Overcliff and back. The class was won by Lady Coleman.

One of the organisers of West Hampshire Horse Society Show, Maureen Green, said it was one of the most successful they had held with a record number of heavy horses.

“We seem to grow every year,” she said. “It has a lot to do with the site. We have a stadium for spectators to sit and watch and a large area next door for competitors to warm up in.”
