A 60-YEAR-OLD man has been found guilty of possessing explosives and regulated substances.

Kevin Yates of Hayes Close, Wimborne had denied the charges but was found guilty after a trial at Bournemouth Crown Court.

The court was told Yates called the NHS 111 number on February 12.

He revealed he was in possession of illegal items and police attended his address.

When officers arrived at his home they found chemicals, air rifles, shotgun cartridges, a crossbow, arrows and a number of knives.

The concern for welfare visit took place at 3.15am and the suspicious items were taken away from the scene.

Firefighters, police and the Army's bomb disposal team then carried out a search of the property.

A cordon was set up on Hayes Lane at the junction of Wimborne Road. Nearby properties were also temporarily evacuated.

Following the incident, Detective Inspector Wayne Seymour, of Bournemouth CID, said: “I would like to thank all those residents and members of the public who were affected while the emergency services dealt with this incident.

"I would like to reassure them that the evacuations and road closures were entirely necessary to allow us to respond to this incident and ensure the safety of the public was not compromised."

Following the verdict, Yates was remanded in custody. He is due to appear for sentencing on October 7.
