A PERSON has died after being hit by a train at Eastleigh Railway Station today.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident but the person was declared dead at the scene.

The incident has caused severe disruption for bank holiday travellers.

Eastleigh station has been shut for much of the day and services between London Waterloo and Weymouth are affected.

British Transport Police (BTP) officers are now working to establish the identity of the person and inform their next of kin.

A file will be prepared for the coroner after the incident, which happened at 8.43am today.

A BTP spokesperson said: "Officers were called to Eastleigh Station on Monday, August 26 after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

"Both officers from the BTP and Hampshire police attended the incident, which was reported to us at 8.43am and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

"Paramedics from the ambulance service also attended but the person was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

A South Western Rail spokesperson said: "Following the emergency services dealing with an incident between Southampton Airport and Basingstoke lines have now reopened.

"Train services running through Eastleigh Station will be cancelled or revised. Disruption is expected until 5pm today."
